Sourcing Guide

Custom Gym Wear Manufacturing: A Startup's Guide.

Gym and compression wear is one of the most competitive categories to launch into — here's what actually matters before your first sample.

Athlete training in gym wear

Fit and fabric performance carry more weight here than in almost any other category.

Pick One Product To Launch With, Not A Full Range

Most new gym wear brands try to launch leggings, sports bras, tops and shorts all at once. Pick one hero product — usually leggings or a compression top — sample it properly, and expand once you know the fit is right. It's far cheaper to fix one product than five.

Fabric Is The Actual Product

In gym wear specifically, fabric performance — squat-proof opacity, four-way stretch, moisture-wicking, compression recovery — is what customers are really paying for. Be specific with your manufacturer about the use case (heavy lifting, running, studio training) rather than just picking a fabric weight blind.

Sample In The Actual Size Range You'll Sell

A sample that fits perfectly in a size Medium doesn't guarantee your size Large or size Small grade correctly. If your budget allows, sample at least two sizes across your intended range before committing to bulk.

Start At A Realistic MOQ

Gym wear brands especially tend to over-order on a first run, guessing at demand that doesn't exist yet. A 20-piece bulk minimum (see our MOQ guide) lets you test real demand for your hero product before committing to a full size and colour range.

What To Bring To Your First Conversation

  • A reference photo or sketch of your hero product
  • The specific use case (training, running, studio, everyday wear)
  • Your target size range
  • A rough quantity for a first test run
